photography: underwater black and whites

Have you ever come across a photo that just takes your breath away? That answer is probably yes. For me, as a marine scientist, I get that feeling every time I dive - like looking through my mask is somewhat like a camera lens. I always wish I could capture the moments as well as professional photographers. Instead, I try to make it a point to revisit my favorite spots on numerous occasions. But for time on land, I'm truly captivated by the underwater techniques of David Doubilet and Ernie Brooks.

Ernie Brooks was featured in the Summer 2011 issue of Alert Diver magazine, where I was introduced to this artistic concept of underwater black and white photography. Both he and David Doubilet have taken the beauty of the underwater world and added an element of intrigue beyond the standard full color layouts of seascapes and marine mammals.

How would you like to be Ernie during this shot?

Photographer unknown to me. Do you know?
Of course this one isn't real.. Photographer also unknown.
What do you think of this style of photography? Have you ever seen underwater black and whites before? What is your impression of the underwater world from these images? Do you have a favorite?

Well, enjoy your weekend, my friends! I'll be hosting a giveaway soon as this blog takes flight and gains some readership. I'll also be hosting a giveaway on Pie N' the Sky blog coming soon! Stay tuned and watch my social media to hear all about it!

Saludos,

    1. Most welcome! Have you guys ever been to Grand Cayman?? You can swim and feed sting rays there. That photo really reminded me of that location.
